Québec City, October 12, 2022 – The mining industry is evolving, changing with the times and innovating to improve its environmental and social record. A recent announcement by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) provides a good example of this trend, and the Québec Mining Association (QMA) commends Rio Tinto and the Canadian government for working together to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the company’s operations at Sorel-Tracy.
The mining industry is a key player in the development of the critical and strategic mineral (CSM) value chain. The substantial investments made will support the processing of CSMs, which are essential to the energy transition made by Canada and Québec to combat climate change.
The QMA believes that more similar announcements will be made in coming years, because of the research and development conducted by the mining industry to improve its environmental footprint. One of Canada’s strengths lies in its mineral resources and qualified workforce, among the best in the world, which allow it to take the lead in an ethical and responsible approach that ensures respect for the environment and for communities.
«I am delighted by this announcement. This partnership once again demonstrates the government’s intention to promote the mining sector as a genuine solution to climate issues and a potential source of enrichment for Canada. The mining industry is ready and willing to face the decarbonization challenge.»
– Josée Méthot, QMA President and CEO
